Original 3D toys by Ilya Boyko
Rumi-Rumi Characters
This series of six characters became an important milestone in my work with 3D printing. From the very beginning, I wanted them to be more than just figurines – they had to be modular toys with personality, designed for play, interaction, and storytelling.
Along the way, I experimented with every detail:
how to make poseable arms that print cleanly without supports,
how to design hidden hollow compartments so each figure could also serve as a tiny storage,
how to balance assembly – some parts snap securely in place, while others can be fixed with a drop of glue,
how to keep everything fully compatible with other Rumi Blocks sets.
Each character grew into its own story and identity:
Bull – a forest traveler with an axe, lantern, and campfire.
Taggy – a funky street pig with a boombox and spray cans.
Nova – a cyber cat with a game controller and hoverboard.
Chompy – a beaver scout with a spear and helmet.
Fixie – a fox inventor with goggles and tools.
Tuko – a punk panda with a spiky cap and urban gear.
What I’m most proud of is that these models turned out to be both playful and practical: they can be printed on a simple home printer, assembled with ease, and enjoyed either as toys or collectibles.
For me, this project became more than just a set of 3D files. It was an exploration of where design, engineering, and play can meet – and how characters can come alive not only on screen, but in your hands.
